Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy
What is Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy?

Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) is a surgical procedure that aims to reduce spasticity in the lower limbs (Alderhey, NHS).
https://alderhey.nhs.uk/services/selective-dorsal-rhizotomy

Spasticity is the result of an abnormal communication between the brain and the nerves. SDR is effective in treating spasticity by cutting the nerve rootlets in the spinal canal that are sending abnormal signals to the muscles.

The most common cause of spasticity in childhood is cerebral palsy. SDR is not a cure for cerebral palsy but intends to improve quality of life and/or mobility in children affected by it.

What are the benefits of SDR?

•Reduce spasticity
•Reduce painful spasms
•Improve ease of cares
•Improve functional mobility (transfers/ walking)
•Improve self-care activities, such as getting dressed
•Improve sleep pattern
•Improve energy levels and physical endurance

The procedure is irreversible so the changes cannot be undone. This is why the selection of suitable patients is essential.

TREATMENT
INITIAL ASSESSMENT
60 minutes £120*
During the initial consultation I take a full medical history and I watch how your child moves and plays. From this, I shall be able to provide a detailed developmental assessment and a plan for how future treatment can be integrated into your family life in a fun way.

I can provide you with additional sources of information and direct you to support groups.

If needed, I can discuss your child's case with other professionals to ensure a multi-disciplinary approach. I can also complete any onward referrals.

INDIVIDUALISED FOLLOW-UP SESSIONS
45 minutes £90*
Therapy is a play led approach, ensuring it can be integrated into day to day family life.

Individualised treatment sessions include ‘hands on’ therapy and teaching parents/carers the child's home exercise programme. I continually review and update the exercises as the child progresses.

Where appropriate, I carry out sessions in other locations, such as local leisure centres, pools, parks, soft play, school, nursery, playgroup and home visits. I provide advice on equipment, for example standing frames and walkers as well as orthotics.
I liaise with other professionals and NHS teams involved with your child, to ensure we are all working towards the same goals.
*RE-SCHEDULING AND CANCELLING APPOINTMENTS
We all know life can sometimes get in the way of best laid plans. If you need to re-arrange your appointment please provide at least 24 hours’ notice. The full fee will be charged if you do not attend your appointment without this prior notice.
